Radio Buraq’s unique
strategy of focusing on
community-specific programming with its
primary intention of development rather
than entertainment has been a great
success in Sialkot and Peshawar. Radio
Buraq has been in continual contact and
collaborated with both urban and rural
communities to promote cultural identity
and provide forums for societal benefit.
It is Radio Buraq’s experience in these
two key small to medium sized urban
areas that make it well suited to taking
a lead in the relief efforts for which
it has been granted a license by the
Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory
Authority (“PEMRA”) on October 21st,
2005 (attached herewith and marked
“Annexure A”). In terms of the present
and urgent needs, the assets that Radio
Buraq possesses are as follows:
Geographical Placement and Transmission
Infrastructure
The license applied
for and granted by PEMRA hereinabove
referred is specifically for setting up
a radio transmitter in Thandiani. Radio
Buraq’s application for installing a
transmitter in Thandiani was intentional
and within an overall technical plan to
achieve the greatest land coverage.
Situated at approximately 8,500 feet and
upon the border of NWFP and Azad
Kashmir, Thandiani is by far the most
attractive option for radio
transmission. The transmission wattage
employed by Radio Buraq is presently of
01 KW and we hope to upgrade this by end
November, 2005 to 02 KW which is
required to encompass the districts of
Abbotabad, Battagram, Mansehra,
Muzzafarabad and Bagh (the areas that
most need organized relief operations).
Human Resources
By virtue of its
experiences and ongoing operations in
Sialkot and Peshawar, Radio Buraq is
currently capable of repositioning its
technical and on air human resources to
begin live programming immediately.
Furthermore, the majority of Radio
Buraq’s staff has linguistic and
cultural affinities and ties with the
people forming its listener-ship.
Without the time consuming activity of
hiring suitable personnel, Radio Buraq
can immediately begin programming in all
the required language, including Urdu,
Hindkoh, Pushto and Kashmiri.
Furthermore, Radio Buraq’s focus on
community-based development programming
has led it to employ staff capable of
dealing with current affairs and issues
requiring a thoughtful and educated
approach. Radio Buraq has shown
commitment to its core strategy by
investing heavily in employing staff and
paying salaries commensurate to
individual employee’s educational and
professional backgrounds.
Relief Organization Network
Radio Buraq has
already targeted and begun daily
coordination and collaboration with all
the major organizations working in the
relief effort on a sustained basis.
These include international agencies
such as the World Health Organization,
the International Committee of the Red
Cross and Save the Children U.S. and
U.K. as well as both public and private
Pakistani organizations such as the
Army, the Ministry of Health, SUNGI, the
Strengthening Participatory
Organization, the Aurat Foundation,
Inter-News and the Pakistan Institute of
Medical Sciences. It is due to this
coordination and collaboration that
Radio Buraq will be able to provide a
platform from which experts from various
fields can be brought in and impart life
saving information on an hourly basis.
